  • Unwelcome Mat Loaner Program
We are purchasing electric unwelcome mats to loan to community members who are experiencing bear activity near their homes.

A bear that enters a house is euthanized because it’s considered a safety risk. What if we could stop bears from ever getting that close in the first place?

Electric mats are designed to do exactly that. Placed in front of doors, under windows, on decks, or near crawl-space entrances, they deliver a memorable but harmless deterrent. The shock is strong enough to teach a bear to stay away—without injuring them. It keeps bears safe, and it keeps homes secure.

Each mat costs ~$550—a fraction of what property damage can cost, and priceless compared to a bear’s life.

We have launched a loaner program so residents don’t have to purchase a mat on their own. Your gift to this campaign will help us build that program and protect both people and bears before conflict ever begins.

  • Creation of a Continuous Improvement Program
We are gathering and analyzing bear-related data to identify gaps in the current system. Hundreds of bears are relocated or euthanized every year, and we are on a path to understand why—where breakdowns occur, and what can be done to prevent these outcomes. This review includes all stakeholder actions leading up to an incident, including local, state and federal agencies, waste haulers, and community. Our goal is to develop recommendations that continuously improve how bears are managed while reducing the need for human intervention.

  • Completing our Community Bear Guide
We’ve gathered a tremendous amount of useful information and are now putting the final touches on a new set of guides. These resources will give communities the tools they need to start a local bear organization and access meaningful support.

This goes beyond educating residents about living safely with bears—it empowers local leaders with clear steps, practical strategies, and proven approaches to reduce human–bear conflict in their own communities.

  • Revising State Statute
Reducing the causes of human-bear conflict across the state, including adopting statewide requirements for adequate trash management and enforcement for local municipalities in bear country.

  • Empowering communities
We empower communities to create the infrastructure needed to proactively change human behavior - the source of nearly all human-bear conflict.

With a growing coalition, our network is rapidly gaining strength, knowledge and respect, leading to a growing ability to establish sustainable infrastructure to remove attractants and protect bears.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
